Catch of the Day
Anglers have many species to choose from,
but muskie, pike and pickerel (walleye)
catches are most often the subject of Lake
of the Woods photographs and fish tales.
Muskellunge are found in
weedy, calm sections of the lake, feed on
fish, frogs and waterfowl, and spawn in
marshy areas in the spring. A very big fish,
anglers have reported catches over 140cm
long, weighing as much as 25kg. The season
for muskie runs from mid-June to the end
of November.
| Put
‘Em Back: Visitors
to the area can purchase non-resident
fishing licenses, then set out
to catch their shoreline lunch,
a Lake of the Woods tradition.
However, all licenses carry
limits on the number of fish
that can be removed from the
lake; the conservation practice
of catch-and-release is common,
highly encouraged and photographable.

Northern Pike feed on
fish, frogs, small birds and small mammals.
Found in weedy, quiet areas, they spawn
in the early spring. The species is known
to reach 90cm in length and more than 19kg.
Pike fishing is permitted throughout the
year.
Pickerel (Walleye) are
often caught in open, clear and cold areas.
They spawn over gravel bottom in shallow
water in the early spring, and they eat
other fish. The walleye season shuts down
during their spawning time, but is open
from January to mid-April, then again from
late May to the end of the year. The species
is known to reach over 90cm in length and
up to 10kg.
Smaller, popular species include smallmouth
and largemouth bass (both
with restricted seasons and both up to 4kg
and 60cm), lake trout (over
25kg, seasonal restrictions), rock
bass (1kg), Perch
(1kg), crappie (1.5kg),
Pumpkinseed (.5kg) (these
four are in season year-round with catch
restrictions.)
